The highly anticipated Champions Trophy is set to commence almost within a week. After a long, Pakistan is all set to host the Champions Trophy but challenges continue to loom over their preparations.

The ‘Men In Green’ has already announced their Champions Trophy squad but they are set to step into the tournament without an opener. That unbelievable move has faced a lot of criticism and former Pakistani player Basit Ali has taken a huge dig at this decision.

Basit Ali Slams Team Management For This Huge Risk

Setbacks and Pakistan seem to be intertwined these days. As they gear up to host the Champions Trophy, a surprising decision has stirred up controversy. With Saim Ayub sidelined due to injury, the management has announced the squad without a dedicated opener, opting to promote Babar Azam instead. Former cricketer Basit Ali has voiced strong criticism regarding this unexpected choice.

“Is this some kind of book cricket? What are you doing? You are playing without an opener and you have made Babar Azam an opener. Go for specialists.” Ali said.

Ali Urges The Side To Take Learnings From India

While opening the innings, Babar Azam is struggling with his form. After his repeated failures, Basit Ali urged Pakistan to take a page from India’s playbook, how they are prioritizing team needs over star power and selecting players purely on performance.

“You won't like this statement, but you should learn from the Indian team management. (Yashasvi) Jaiswal sat out after one match. When Virat (Kohli) didn't play, they brought in (Shreyas) Iyer, and when Iyer performed, he retained his place.” he said.

“(Rishabh) Pant, who in my opinion, is one of their main players, is sitting out. You cannot select guys on the basis of BPL (Bangladesh Premier League) performances,” he added.

“It is my request, please do something. Please take an opener and spinner with you in the squad,” Basit Ali said while requesting the team to make some potential changes.

As the Champions Trophy 2025 is commencing on February 19, all the teams are scheduled to finalize their squad on February 12. It will be intriguing to see whether Pakistan opts for any changes or sticks with their current lineup for the tournament.
