There is always a fine line between passion and provocation in cricket and Lucknow Super Giants’ (LSG) spinner Digvesh Rathi seems to have crossed it once too often. During LSG’s crunch clash against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) at the Ekana Stadium, Rathi not only lost his cool but also picked up a 50% fine on his match fee and a one-match suspension, thanks to a heated exchange with Abhishek Sharma.
Suresh Raina Slams Digvesh Rathi For Repeated Fines In IPL 2025
And now, Suresh Raina has joined the chorus of criticism and he didn’t hold back. It all boiled over after Rathi dismissed Abhishek Sharma and gave him a fiery send-off. Sharma, in no mood to take it lying down, responded with words of his own. The two Indian players had to be separated by umpires and teammates before things escalated further.
It wasn’t Rathi’s first brush with controversy either. The “notebook celebration”, where he mimics writing down a name after taking a wicket, had already gotten him into trouble with the BCCI this season. In fact, to dodge another ban, he had resorted to literally scribbling on the ground. But clearly, restraint isn’t his strongest suit.
Former India batter and CSK legend Suresh Raina didn’t mince his words post-match. While speaking about the incident, he questioned the young spinner’s judgement and priorities.
“He was sold for INR 30 lakh. Digvesh has been fined twice, and the third fine is on the way. What would he take home after the IPL?”
Raina also stressed that watching two Indian players go at each other like that on the field does the game no good.
“It is not good to see two Indian players having a go at each other.”
Abhishek Sharma Had The Last Laugh
While Digvesh took 2 wickets, Abhishek Sharma hit back the best way possible with the bat. The left-hander smashed 59 off just 20 balls, bagged the Player of the Match and most importantly, took his team home with a 6-wicket win.
And just like that, LSG’s playoff hopes went up in smoke. With the loss, they are officially out of the race, while Mumbai Indians and Delhi Capitals now scrap for the final spot. Gujarat Titans, Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Punjab Kings are already through.
Meanwhile, for a young player like Digvesh Rathi, the IPL is a golden ticket and he is at serious risk of throwing it away. With a suspension, multiple fines and a ticking reputation, Rathi better wise up fast. Because if he keeps playing with fire, he might not be around long enough to learn from the burns.
