Virat Kohli resumed captaincy duties for Team India after stand-in skipper Jasprit Bumrah walked out of the field on Day 5 of the SCG Test against Australia. Kohli, who led India to most Test wins as skipper, stepped down as national captain in early 2022 to make way for Rohit Sharma.

However, amidst recent struggles with the bat and as a leader, Sharma opted himself out of India’s playing XI for the series-deciding fifth Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 Test match in Sydney.

Fans celebrate India’s fightback under Virat Kohli

India’s stand-in skipper and premier fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah walked off the field on Day 2 of the SCG Test after Australia reached 151-6 from 42 overs. With Virat Kohli assuming duties, Team India prevented the Australian tail from flourishing as Nitish Kumar Reddy, Prasidh Krishna and Mohammed Siraj shot out the hosts for 181 to secure a narrow four-run lead at the halfway stage of the match.

As it turned out, Kohli’s resumption as Test captain was openly welcomed and celebrated by a legion of Indian cricket fans, particularly on social media. Several Indian fans touted Team India’s spirited fightback against Australia with Kohli at the helm as a “restoration” of glory days, while some even ardently called for the 36-year-old to assume captaincy duties on a full-time basis over Jasprit Bumrah and a struggling Rohit Sharma.

Here is a look at some of the fans expressing their reactions over the return of Virat Kohli as India’s Test captain:

Under the interim leadership of Jasprit Bumrah, Team India scripted a historic 295-run victory in Perth to take a 1-0 lead in the five-match Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 Test series. With Rohit Sharma assuming his responsibilities before Adelaide’s pink-ball event next-up, Team India lost conceded the early series lead with huge defeats at the Adelaide Oval and at the MCG and narrowly escaped with a rain-induced draw at The Gabba.

Struggling as a leader and with the bat, Rohit Sharma opted himself out of the playing XI from the series-deciding SCG Test.
