The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has turned down Gautam Gambhir’s choice for India’s next fielding coach. A few days after Gambhir was appointed as Team India head coach, the former opener lobbied for legendary South African cricketer Jonty Rhodes for the role of the fielding coach of the Indian cricket team.

The 42-year-old also advocated for Vinay Kumar to become India’s next bowling coach, only to have advice rejected by the BCCI.

Rahul Dravid’s tenure as India’s head coach came to an end with the conclusion of the 2024 T20 World Cup in West Indies. His exit also coincided with the departure of batting coach Vikram Rathour, bowling coach Paras Mhambrey, and fielding coach T Dilip.

As per general BCCI norms, the Indian board allows the head coach of the Indian team to handpick their own support staff members. While the same policy is to be applied to newly-appointed Gautam Gambhir, the former Indian opener had his opinion rejected by the Indian board when he lobbied for Vinay Kumar’s appointment as new bowling coach.

Moreover, as reported by the Hindustan Times, the BCCI has also rejected Gambhir’s choice for India’s next fielding coach, former South African cricketer Jonty Rhodes. Both Gambhir and Rhodes have worked with each other during their time at the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) franchise.

Regardless, Gambhir’s first international assignment for Team India will be to oversee their upcoming limited-overs tour of Sri Lanka between July and August.
