The BCCI alongside the Indian team management and the selectors are considering establishing a financial policy and scheme to reward players committed to excelling at the Test level for India and in the Ranji Trophy for their respective first-class sides.

According to a report in the Times of India, BCCI apex council heads, including Secretary Jay Shah and President Roger Binny, are in discussions with India head coach Rahul Dravid, captain Rohit Sharma and chief selector Ajit Agarkar to usher in a major financial windfall on international and domestic players.

The discussions could result in a financial strategy, which allows the Indian board to raise the players' annual retainership fees and match salaries both internationally and at the domestic first-class level so that a player who commits to a full season for India or his state can at least earn remuneration equal to lower mid-level contracts in Indian Premier League (IPL).

BCCI To Raise India, First-Class Players' Contracts And Match Fees

"The board has asked for recommendations from the Indian team management. They are taking a very aggressive approach towards maintaining the sanctity of the longest format of the game," a BCCI source privy to the developments told TOI.

"It is imperative that players, who are committed to first-class cricket, are rewarded at a similar level as IPL cricket. That would mean that existing remuneration has to be multiplied."

After reprimanding Ishan Kishan and Shreyas Iyer with an axing from the central contracts list over their refusal to play domestic first-class cricket at the peak of the season, the BCCI wants to get to the root cause of the issue and eradicate the problem by substantially rewarding players who are dedicated to playing the Ranji Trophy.

Instances where players have skipped first-class matches citing false injuries and niggles, especially after finding a contract at an IPL auction, have forced the BCCI to act and once again mull raising match fees so that players are duly rewarded for their interest and commitment.
