Former India head coach Ravi Shastri believes that sidelined stars Ishan Kishan and Shreyas Iyer will eventually make their way back into the Indian team. Shastri's comments followed the exclusion of Kishan and Iyer from the BCCI's annual central contracts for 2023-24.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced the senior Indian men’s team annual retainership on Wednesday, February 28, omitting both Ishan Kishan and Shreyas Iyer from the list. 

Kishan, who has not played for India since November due to reports of indiscipline, and Iyer, recently dropped from India’s Test squad against England, faced the snub.

Shastri offered words of encouragement to Iyer and Ishan, expressing confidence in their eventual return to the national team.

BCCI secretary Jay Shah had previously cautioned centrally-contracted India players against prioritizing the Indian Premier League (IPL) over domestic cricket. 

With Ishan, Iyer, and Deepak Chahar opting out of the ongoing Ranji Trophy season, Shah reminded all India cricketers of the potential repercussions of neglecting domestic cricket.

The situation has deteriorated for the duo because they chose not to participate in domestic cricket, despite the BCCI's directive. Iyer held a Grade B contract in the BCCI annual retainership contracts for the previous season, while Kishan was in Grade C.

In recent weeks, speculation has swirled about when and how Ishan and Iyer could stage a comeback to the Indian team, but both players have stayed inactive. 

India head coach Rahul Dravid reiterated multiple times that players must demonstrate their match fitness to earn a recall to the national side.

With the T20 World Cup looming after IPL 2024, the cash-rich league presents an opportunity for Ishan and Iyer to stake their claim for selection in the national team.
