In a major development, Bangladesh's legendary all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan has officially announced his retirement from Test cricket on September 26, 2024, ahead of the second and final Test against India in Kanpur. However, the cricket world remains uncertain about whether this will be his last match.

The 37-year-old all-rounder, regarded as one of Bangladesh's finest cricketers, had expressed his desire to play his farewell Test on home soil during the upcoming series against South Africa. But his involvement in this potential home series is in doubt due to ongoing political unrest in Bangladesh and his legal troubles.

Shakib Al Hasan was one of 147 individuals named in a murder case related to the violent anti-government protests that erupted during July and August this year. With Bangladesh gripped by political instability and rising violence, the all-rounder has expressed concerns over his safety.

BCB Chief Faruque Ahmed Comments On Shakib's Security

In a recent press statement, BCB chief Faruque Ahmed acknowledged the gravity of Shakib's security concerns, stating that the board cannot provide the necessary protection for the embattled cricketer. He further explained that the board cannot interfere with legal matters or guarantee safety during the current political unrest.

"We don't have it (Shakib's security) in our hand. The security needs to come from the government and he will have to take his own decision. We cannot say anything about his security. We don't have the ability to provide security to any individual.  I am neither an agency nor police or the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB). The security issue needs to be cleared by the government because from the board we cannot say anything." Faruque told reporters at Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium.

The BCB had earlier assured the star all-rounder would face no issues returning to Bangladesh to play. However, the volatile political situation has cast doubt on whether those assurances can still be honoured. If the situation does not improve, and if the South Africa series is cancelled or postponed, Shakib may be forced to end his Test career away from home soil.
