Sri Lanka will have Charith Asalanka as their new captain for T20Is when they meet India in a three-match series, starting on July 27. Asalanka will replace Wanindu Hasaranga, who stepped down from the role earlier this month.

Apart from the big announcement, the Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) on Tuesday (July 23) confirmed their strong 16-member squad for the series.

No Mathews, Dhananjaya de Silva In SL Squad

On the other hand, Sri Lanka won’t have veterans such as Angelo Mathews and Dhananjaya de Silva, while Dinesh Chandimal and Kusal Janith Perera, the other-old horses, managed to make the cut.

Among the big names, Sadeera Samarawickrama and Dilshan Madhushanka are not on the squad either, although they did not clarify their omission.

“The Honorable Minister of Sports and Youth Affairs, Harin Fernando, approved the squad. The T20I games will be played on the 27th, 28th, and 30th July at the PICS, Pallekele,” SLC said in a statement.

Sri Lanka had a shocking T20 World Cup 2024, where they won only one match before getting knocked out of the competition before even reaching the Super 8 stage. This will be their first assignment since then, while India, under Shubman Gill, played a five-match T20I series in Zimbabwe after their famous triumph under Rohit Sharma.
