Wanindu Hasaranga resigns from T20I captaincy (x)
In a significant development, Wanindu Hasaranga has resigned from Sri Lanka's captaincy duties in the T20I format and wishes to continue his services and remain in the side as a player.
In his resignation letter he stated that it was in the best interest of Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) that he decided to relinquish the captaincy duties and remain in the side as a player and contribute for the team.
Sri Lanka Cricket, while accepting his resignation, stated that Hasaranga will remain an important player for us in our international cricketing plans.
“Sri Lanka will always have my utmost best efforts as a player, and I will support and stand by my team and leadership as always,” said Wanindu Hasaranga in his resignation letter.
Another reason that may have led Wanindu Hasaranga stepped down as the captain of the T20I side could be Sri Lanka's early exit from the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2024. The Sri Lankan spinner, who was appointed as the T20I captain, only last year, led the team in 10 matches.
Under his captaincy, Sri Lanka experienced mixed results in the recently concluded T20 World Cup 2024. The Asian team had only one single match against the Netherlands in the marquee tournament and failed to advance to the group stage.
India will tour Sri Lanka for a limited-overs series which begins with the three T20Is to be played on July 26, 27 and 29 at the Pallekele International Stadium, followed by three ODIs in Colombo. Ahead of this they will announce their squad and skipper for the series.
