In a significant development, Australia Women's team captain Alyssa Healy has announced immediate retirement from T20Is, confirming that she won't feature in the T20 World Cup 2026. The talismanic cricketer has also stated that she will retire from all forms of cricket following India Women's tour of Australia 2026, set to kick off in February.
Australia captain Alyssa Healy announces retirement before India series
On Tuesday morning, Cricket Australia revealed that Alyssa Healy wouldn't feature in the Women's T20 World Cup 2026, having announced her retirement from all forms of cricket. Healy made her decision public during an episode of the Willow Talk Podcast, which she co-hosts with Adam Peacock and former Australian wicketkeeper Brad Haddin.
In her statement, Alyssa Healy disclosed that the upcoming multi-format series against the visiting Indian side would be her last appearance for the Australian Women's cricket team. The swashbuckling keeper-batter reckoned that although she still feels passionate about donning the baggy green, a sharp decline in her competitive spirit has prompted her to call it a day at the end of the Australian home summer.
"It's with mixed emotions that the upcoming India series will be my last for Australia," Healy was quoted as saying by Cricket.com.au.
"I'm still passionate about playing for Australia, but I've somewhat lost that competitive edge that's kept me driven since the start, so the time feels right to call it a day," she added.
Selfless Alyssa Healy confirms immediate T20I retirement
As revealed by Cricket Australia, Alyssa Healy won't play the three-match T20I series, which kicks off India Women's tour of Australia 2026. The veteran cricketer has selflessly decided to step aside from the shortest format, allowing the Australian management ample time to prepare a backup for the T20 World Cup.
It's worth mentioning that Australia have just six T20Is left before the Women's T20 World Cup, starting on June 12. Therefore, had Healy bid adieu to the shortest format after the three T20Is against India Women, Australia would've got only three matches to find a suitable replacement for the mega event.
However, as she won't feature in the three-match series, her decision gives Australia the luxury of time to settle their core lineup for the Women's T20 World Cup 2026. Therefore, if Alyssa Healy plays the remaining four matches of the tour, the Test match against India Women at Perth Stadium will be her final swan song for the Australian Women's team.
