Former South African fast bowler Dale Steyn is set to work with the England Lions on a short-term basis. The England Lions will be traveling to South Africa for a tour that will take place from November 20 to December 14. Steyn will join the squad as a bowling consultant, sharing his wealth of experience and knowledge with the young players, especially the fast bowlers.
The tour will primarily focus on an intensive training camp, designed to enhance the skills of some of England’s brightest young fast bowlers. As part of the tour, the team will also play a four-day match against South Africa A in the Western Province, giving them much-needed match experience under testing conditions.
Dale Steyn Will Join Andrew Flintoff's Coaching Staff
England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) announced a 19-member squad earlier this month, which includes ten seam bowlers. Among them are two players with international experience, Pat Brown and Josh Hull, and several others who are seen as future prospects for the national team, such as Dillon Pennington and John Turner.
This tour is also significant as it will be the first one for Andrew Flintoff as the head coach of the England Lions. Flintoff, a former England all-rounder, is looking to bring in experienced professionals like Steyn to strengthen the team’s development.
Dale Steyn Parts Ways With Sunrisers Hyderabad
Steyn’s move to join the England Lions comes shortly after he parted ways with Sunrisers Hyderabad, where he served as a bowling coach in the IPL. He had been with the team since the 2022 season but opted out of the 2024 IPL season for personal reasons. His role with the England Lions is seen as a great fit, given his passion for mentoring young bowlers.
