Former Australian cricketer David Warner has expressed interest in coming out of retirement to play in the upcoming Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) series against India. Warner, who recently retired from international Test cricket, said he would be open to helping the team if they needed someone in the opening spot. He mentioned that he had already spoken to Australia’s head coach, Andrew McDonald, and cheekily hinted at being available.
However, Warner’s comments have not been well received by everyone, including former Australian women’s captain, Lisa Sthalekar, who believes it’s time to move on.
Australia Struggle With Opening Batsmen
Australia are currently facing challenges in deciding who will open the batting alongside Usman Khawaja for the BGT. Several players like Cameron Bancroft, Marcus Harris, Sam Konstas, and Josh Inglis are being considered for the role. In this context, Warner has offered to return if the selectors find themselves in desperate need of an experienced opener.
While Warner said he retired for the right reasons, he emphasised that he would step up if the team needed him. However, this suggestion has raised eyebrows, particularly among cricket experts who feel it’s time for new blood in the Australian team.
Lisa Sthalekar strongly opposes the idea of Warner returning to the squad. In her column for The Nightly, she criticised the Australian selectors for giving Warner a farewell last summer, arguing that this special treatment is part of the reason the team is now in a difficult situation.
“What baffles me is that this guy had his swansong last summer to say farewell and finish on his terms,” Sthalekar wrote in her column for The Nightly.
“One could argue that because of that allowance, the team is in this situation as selectors didn’t use those Tests wisely to blood the next opener. Therefore, Warner suggesting to answer the mayday call if it was to come, will only kick the issue down the road again. With England coming out next summer, enough is enough,” she added.
David Warner's Test Career
David Warner has had an illustrious Test career spanning 14 years, during which he has accumulated 8,786 runs in 112 matches. As a left-handed opener, he has scored 8,747 runs across 202 innings, including 26 centuries and 37 fifties.
