Afghanistan scripted history Friday night as they thrashed New Zealand by 84 runs in match 14 of the ICC T20 World Cup 2024. This turned out as the first-ever instance for Afghanistan where they have had the better of the Kiwis in any format.
In a Group C clash at the Providence Stadium in Guyana, Afghanistan were asked to bat first by Kane Williamson at the toss. Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Ibrahim Zadran led the Afghan charge with the bat as they put up a stand of 103 runs at the top.
While defending the total, Rashid Khan and Fazalhaq Farooqi grabbed four wickets each while both conceding 17 runs. Gurbaz was adjudged Player of the Match as they finally got over the line against the Kiwis.
With their first win over the team from Oceania, Afghanistan got themselves leading the race towards the second stage of the tournament i.e., Super Eights in group C with matches against West Indies and Papua New Guinea still left.
Up next, they will face PNG on Thursday, June 13 at the Brian Lara Cricket Academy in Trinidad and Tobago.
