Afghanistan number three Azmatullah Omarzai made his way back to the sheds after cracking a useful cameo against New Zealand in match number 14 of the ongoing 2024 T20 World Cup. After launching a couple of sixes and a boundary in his 13-ball 22, the dashing right-hander failed to read Matt Henry’s slower delivery during the death overs of the innings.

Regardless, Omarzai’s sparkling cameo helped Afghanistan maintain the same run-scoring juggernaut formed by openers Ibrahim Zadran and Rahmanullah Gurban.

Azmatullah Omarzai departs after useful cameo

Arriving to the crease following the 103-run opening partnership between half-centurion Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Ibrahim Zadran, number three batter Azmatullah Omarzai kept Afghanistan’s run-scoring juggernaut rolling with a boundary and two sixes during his sizzling cameo of 13-ball 22.

The cricketer was eventually dismissed in the 17th over of the innings, when he failed to read a 127kph slower delivery on a full length towards middle and off by New Zealand’s new-ball paceman Matt Henry. Omarzai, attempting to go inside out, ended up slicing the ball towards Lockie Ferguson at deep cover point region as Afghanistan slipped to 127-2.

Earlier in the match, Ibrahim Zadran (44 off 41 balls) and wicketkeeper-batter Rahmanullah Gurbaz (56-ball 80) shared a scintillating 103-run partnership in less than 15 overs after New Zealand skipper Kane Williamson won the toss and opted to field first.

Against the run of play, Azmatullah Omarzai’s dismissal in the 17th over ended up restricting Afghanistan to 159-6 by the completion of their innings.
