In a dramatic turn of events during the T20 World Cup 2024 semi-final at the Brian Lara Stadium, Tarouba, Trinidad, Afghanistan's batting unit struggled profoundly against South Africa.

This match saw Afghanistan setting an undesirable record by achieving the lowest powerplay score in T20 World Cup knockout history, managing just 21/5 in the first six overs.

Afghanistan skipper Rashid Khan won the toss and opted to bat first, a decision quickly proven costly by South Africa's formidable new-ball bowlers.

Afghanistan innings started on a disastrous note with Rahmanullah Gurbaz departing in the first over, followed by Gulbadin Naib in the third.

The collapse continued as Ibrahim Zadran was dismissed on the first ball of the fourth over, veteran Mohammad Nabi fell in the same over, and Nangeyalia Kharote was out on the last ball of the fifth over.

The South African bowlers, Marco Jansen, Kagiso Rabada, and Anrich Nortje, not only took wickets at regular intervals but also shattered Afghanistan’s confidence, restricting them to a mere 21/5 at the end of the powerplay.

This score is now the lowest in the history of T20 World Cup knockout matches, surpassing the previous lows of 34/4 by Sri Lanka against Pakistan in 2009 and 29/3 by West Indies against Sri Lanka in the same edition.

After the powerplay, Afghanistan's woes continued as they kept losing wickets under relentless pressure from the South African bowlers.

Ultimately, Afghanistan was bundled out for just 56 runs in 11.5 overs, marking a disappointing end to their roller-coaster World Cup campaign which had seen them achieve moments of magic, such as defeating New Zealand and Australia and reaching a World Cup Semi-finals for the first time.
