In a significant development, the BCCI has internally discussed with all ten franchises how many retentions they want before the commencement of the IPL 2025 mega auction.

While most of the votes have gone between five and seven retentions, one franchise expressed their will to make it eight. On the other hand, some of the franchises also wanted not having any retentions at all, as Cricbuzz reported.

All Eyes On IPL 2025 Mega Auction

IPL mega auction took place last time in 2022. Back then, franchises were allowed to retain a maximum of four players, while the Right To Match (RTM) cards, which were initially used, were not there at all.

“This development has emerged as the BCCI has initiated the process of finalising the retention policy. A final decision is anticipated to be announced at a meeting of the owners later this month,” a Cricbuzz report read.

BCCI Acting CEO and IPL in-charge Hemang Amin was the one who had meetings with franchise CEOs regarding the matter. Notably, the mega auction for the upcoming edition will take place later this year.

Apart from the player retention, the BCCI also discussed with franchises’ owners their views on the ‘Impact Player’ rule.
