The T20 World Cup 2024 wrapped up in spectacular fashion, with India beating South Africa in a thrilling final in Barbados, clinching their second title.

Throughout the tournament, we witnessed breathtaking performances—from explosive innings to mesmerizing spells with the ball.

Yet, not all players shone under the spotlight; some crumbled under pressure, their form deserting them when it mattered most.

From misfired rockets to wayward deliveries, these players had a tournament they'd rather forget, as they fell short of expectations in cricket's grand carnival.

At OneCricket, we're diving into the 'Flop XI' of the T20 World Cup 2024, highlighting those who, unfortunately, couldn't deliver on the big stage.

Top Order

Reeza Hendricks: Reeza Hendricks had a tournament to forget, amassing just 113 runs across 9 innings at a meager average of 14.12 and a pedestrian strike rate of 87.59. The final was no different, as he faltered when South Africa needed him most, managing a mere 4 runs when chasing India’s target of 177.

Kusal Mendis (wk): Expectations were sky-high for the seasoned Kusal Mendis, but he could only muster 75 runs in 3 innings at an average of 25.00 and a strike rate of 111.94. His underwhelming performance with the bat was a key factor in Sri Lanka's failure to progress beyond the group stage.

Mitchell Marsh (c): Leading from the front, or at least trying to, Mitchell Marsh had a dismal run as Australia’s captain. He scraped together 125 runs at an average of 20.83 across seven innings, with a strike rate of 116.82. His inability to deliver in crucial games played a significant role in Australia’s premature exit from the tournament.

Middle Order

Kane Williamson: Kane Williamson was expected to steer New Zealand to glory. However, the Black Caps' campaign hit a snag, exiting in the group stage after losses to Afghanistan and the West Indies.

Williamson managed a paltry 28 runs in three innings, averaging 14.00 with a strike rate of 87.50. His usually reliable bat fell silent when it mattered most.

Jonny Bairstow: Bairstow scored just 110 runs in 6 innings at an average of 27.50 and a strike rate of 134.14. His duck against India in the semi-final was the final nail in the coffin for England's title defense, leaving fans yearning for his usual fireworks.

Shadab Khan: Shadab Khan's tournament was a shadow of his potential, providing little for Pakistan. He scraped together 44 runs in three innings. With the ball, he went wicketless in three matches, a far cry from the all-rounder’s capabilities.

Sam Curran: Entering the World Cup after winning the Player of the Tournament in the 2022 edition, Sam Curran failed to make an impact. In five matches, he took only three wickets—two against South Africa and one against India in the semi-final. When his team needed him with the bat in the semis, he fell for 2, leaving England in dire straits.

Bowlers

Shaheen Afridi: Expected to be Pakistan's spearhead, Shaheen Afridi took just 5 wickets in 4 matches at an average of 21.00 and an economy of 6.56. His inability to strike more frequently was a major factor in Pakistan's failure to progress to the Super 8.

Josh Hazlewood: While he maintained an economy of 6.04, Hazlewood's wicket-taking ability faltered, managing only 4 wickets in 6 matches at an average of 36.25. His lack of breakthroughs proved costly for Australia, as their campaign ended earlier than hoped.

Matheesha Pathirana: Despite his stellar performance in IPL 2024, where he claimed 13 wickets in six matches, Matheesha Pathirana struggled in the World Cup. In three matches, he managed only three wickets, two against the Netherlands, and went wicketless against South Africa.

Maheesh Theekshana: Theekshana had a tough tournament, taking only 1 wicket in 3 matches, which came against the Netherlands. He went wicketless against both South Africa and Bangladesh, leaving a significant gap in Sri Lanka's bowling attack.
