In a shocking development, there are reports that India skipper Rohit Sharma has decided to withdraw himself from the fifth and final Test against Australia for the benefit of the team. Notably, Rohit is struggling with the bat and has averaged just 6 in the ongoing BGT.

Now, with Rohit out of the Indian Test side, questions are being raised about Gautam Gambhir, who is yet to prove his mettle as India's head coach. Things were going right for Rohit the captain in the first half of 2024, but things went downhill since the start of the New Zealand series. 

Now, it has made the fans curious about the hitman's performance as India's captain under the guidance of former head coach Rahul Dravid and current coach Gautam Gambhir.

Rohit Sharma's Captaincy Record Under Rahul Dravid

It is worth noting that Rohit's first Test as a captain under Rahul Dravid's coaching came against Sri Lanka at home in March 2022. Since then, he has featured in 16 Tests as India's captain during Dravid's tenure and boasts a strong record. Here is a list of matches India played under Rohit's leadership during Dravid's tenure.

Why Did Rohit Shine Under Dravid's  Coaching?

Rohit is more of a defensive captain, who likes to tackle intent in his own way. Dravid's coaching suited Rohit as he didn't intervene much in on-field decisions and it gave a freedom to Rohit to tackle situations in his own way.

There was a clarity of thoughts under Dravid's tenure. Thus, it also didn't impact the hitman's batting. Talking about the strategic decisions, then Rohit is also a defensive captain and it aligned with Dravid's coaching.

Gautam Gambhir's tenure began in July 2024 when he first toured Sri Lanka. Since then, India have played three Test series and saw undesirable results.

Why Has Rohit Failed Under Gambhir's Coaching?

Talking about Gambhir, he likes to show aggression and intent on the field. Thus, somewhere this forced aggression and intent by Rohit has backfired, which also resulted in his batting as well. 

Further, by the looks of it, it seemed that there was a lot of intervention from Gambhir as to what the style of play should be and it didn't suited Rohit's captaincy.
