The Board of Control For Cricket in India (BCCI) has formally unveiled Gautam Gambhir as the new head coach of the Indian cricket team.

After the departure of Rahul Dravid, post the T20 World Cup 2024, Gambhir was appointed as the new head coach, and his first major assignment will be the Sri Lanka white-ball tour, which commences from July 27.

Ahead of the departure to the Island nation, Gambhir attended the press conference alongside chief selector, Ajit Agarkar, and addressed numerous issues.

Suryakumar Yadav captaincy

Both Gambhir and Agarkar talked about Surya's captaincy, and stated that the entire dressing room was consulted before taking the call. Gambhir also stated that Surya has the backing of the coaching staff and the goal is to do well in the T20 World Cup 2026.

Hardik's injury issue

Agarkar stated that Hardik's fitness is a cause of concern for Team India, as the team wants someone who is available all the time. As a result, he was not made the captain of the T20I team.

RO-KO's future

Gambhir when asked about Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma's future, stated that both the players are champions, and if the fitness is there, they will take part in the World Cup 2027.

Relationship with Virat Kohli

Gambhir was asked about his relationship with Virat Kohli, and he mentioned that they share a good bond, and their relation is not for the TRP. Also, the new head coach added that he and Kohli have shared a lot of messages, and have talked about the future of Indian cricket.

Gill is a 3 format player

Both Gambhir and Agarkar are on the same page as they agreed that Shubman Gill is a 3 format player and they see him as the future of Indian cricket. Agarkar also stated indirectly that they look at Gill as the future captain of India.
