R Ashwin On The Verge Of Surpassing Kumble To Achieve Another Milestone In Ranchi Test

Premier off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin stands on the brink of another tremendous milestone in his illustrious career for India ahead of the fourth Test against England in Rajkot.

The great bowler, who bagged a colossal record of becoming only the ninth bowler and second Indian in the history of Tests with 500 wickets next to his name, can now become the highest-ever wicket-taker on Indian soil in the traditional format.

The 37-year-old is only two wickets behind his hero and spin legend Anil Kumble, the man at the top of the elite bracket of bowlers with the most number of wickets in Tests in Indian conditions.

Ashwin On The Brink Of Another Huge Milestone

Having taken two wickets in the previous Test in Rajkot, where his presence was curtailed due to a family emergency back home in Chennai, Ashwin elevated his tally at home to a jaw-dropping 348 wickets in 58 Tests. In comparison, Kumble finished with 350 wickets in India from 63 Tests.

Ashwin can not only match Kumble's tally but surpass it by the end of the Test match to then become just the second bowler with 350 or more Test wickets in India. The great bowler averages a stunning 21.31 for his scalps at home and has bagged an astonishing 26 fifers - the most by a bowler in India.

Notably, Kumble had taken his wickets in India at a higher average than his legacy successor of 24.88 with a five-wicket haul count of 25. However, the great leg-spinner still has more 10-fers (7) than Ashwin, who has picked up 10 wickets for a Test match on six occasions in India.

Overall, Ashwin hasn't quite been at his best in the Test series against England and has taken only 12 wickets in the first three games. The legendary bowler will be hoping to make amends in the fourth Test in Ranchi, starting Friday (February 23).
