As Sunrisers Eastern Cape prepare to defend their SA20 title, a new era begins under captain Tristan Stubbs.
The 25-year-old South African star assumes leadership from the highly successful Aiden Markram, who guided the team to three consecutive finals and two championships. Stubbs faces the significant challenge of sustaining this dominance as the fourth season approaches, starting December 26.
Markram's departure leaves a considerable void, as he was instrumental both as a leader and a performer. His record as the league's third-highest run-scorer, coupled with 17 wickets, underscores his all-round value.
Stubbs, now a key figure in South Africa's national setup, aims to build on his own 723 SA20 runs while inspiring the squad to continue its winning ways.
New SEC skipper shares motto to deliver strong
Stubbs emphasised the strength drawn from the team's local core, stating that they will continue to build on Aiden Markram’s legacy.
"We have lost Aiden Markram, but have stuck with the same winning mantra. We have got many local Port Elizabeth boys in the squad who truly understand playing at St. George's Park--that passion cannot be explained to outsiders. It will hopefully inspire the entire team to match the intensity we've shown in the first three years and keep delivering success," Stubbs said.
Stubbs to build on Markram’s win
The new captain will be looking to improve on a relatively quiet season last year, where he scored 232 runs. Notably, he averages a total of 32.86 from 36 SA 20 innings while striking at 140.11 and also has three fifties to his name in the tournament.
Sunrisers Eastern Cape begin their campaign on December 27 against the Paarl Royals, following the season opener between MI Cape Town and Durban Super Giants on December 26.
