In a massive setback for Kolkata Knight Riders, veteran English opener Jason Roy has pulled out of the IPL 2024 due to personal reasons.

The franchise has roped in swashbuckling keeper-batter Phil Salt as Roy's like-for-like replacement.

Despite playing some scintillating knocks for Delhi Capitals in IPL 2023, the famed English opener failed to attract any bid in the mini-auction conducted in December last year.

Therefore, Roy's withdrawal serves as a boon for the hard-hitting batter, who joins the two-time champions as a replacement player for the upcoming edition.

KKR's strongest playing XI for IPL 2024

Prominent Afghan batter Rahmanullah Gurbaz had a torrid run for KKR in the IPL 2023, managing only 227 runs in 11 innings at an average of 20.64 and a strike rate of 133.53.

So, they might think of starting this season with Salt, who had a comparatively better tournament than Gurbaz. Thus, the English star might open with Venkatesh Iyer, an integral member of the KKR setup.

Among others, skipper Shreyas Iyer will likely bat at number three, followed by Nitish Rana, Rinku Singh and Andre Russell in the middle order.

Veteran off-spinner Sunil Narine will likely bat at number seven, with Mitchell Starc, Harshit Rana, Varun Chakravarthy, and Suyash Sharma comprising their bowling unit.

They have multiple quality options - Manish Pandey, Anukul Roy, and Chetan Sakariya- to pick their impact player based on the match situation.
