In a groundbreaking development, it has been reported that RCB legend, Virat Kohli is keen on taking over the captaincy mantle ahead of the start of next season. As per a video of ESPN Cricinfo Chatters, it has come to light that the former skipper won't mind leading the side for a-least one season.
It has been reported that the Bengaluru based franchise will choose Kohli as their captain, if they don't get a suitable captaincy candidate in the IPL mega auction. The upcoming IPL mega auction will be an interesting affair since many captaincy candidates will be available. Reports state that the likes of Rishabh Pant, KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer will put forward their names in the auction pool.
RCB is likely to go after one of the big names, but if they miss out on any of the above mentioned names, then Kohli will most likely step up as the leader of the side. RCB are likely to release their skipper Faf du Plessis, who led the franchise in the last three seasons and took the side to the knockouts in two of those seasons.
Virat Kohli left RCB captaincy after 2021 season
Kohli has been loyal to the Royal Challengers since the inaugural IPL season in 2008. He has so far played all the seasons for them and is the leading run-getter in the tournament's history. He led RCB from 2013 to 2021 and also led them to the finals in 2016, where they suffered a heartbreaking defeat against SRH.
Mid-way through the 2021 season, Kohli announced that he'll step away from captaincy and as a result, RCB roped in du Plessis, who steered the side to two playoffs in three seasons.
