Shreyas Iyer became the costliest purchase in the history of IPL, at least for a while, at the 2025 mega auction on Sunday, November 24. Following an intense tug of war between Punjab Kings and Delhi Capitals, the star Indian batter eventually landed with the former for a record sum of Rs.26.75 crore.

Shortly after breaking bank at the bidding event, the 29-year-old expressed his excitement over finding a new home in IPL for the upcoming 2025 edition of the tournament.

After becoming one of the most expensive purchases in the history of IPL auction, Shreyas Iyer expressed his excitement in joining the Punjab Kings franchise. In a short video shared by Punjab Kings on their social media, Iyer also stated that he is looking forward to start his journey with them through next year’s IPL 2025 season.

The 29-year-old said:

“Hello everyone. Elated to join the Punjab Kings family. Can’t wait to kickstart with the season. Looking forward.”

Shreyas Iyer briefly became the most expensive cricketer in IPL history by landing a Rs.26.75 crore gig with Punjab Kings. However, his record was toppled by his national teammate and Indian wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant, who is set to play for LSG next season.

Shreyas Iyer led the KKR franchise to a drought-ending victory in IPL 2024 earlier this year. Despite winning the title, the cricketer was released by the franchise on October 31, i.e., on the day of IPL 2025 retention announcement. In doing so, Iyer became the first IPL-winning skipper in history to not get retained by his franchise.

As of now, the talented Indian batter is plying his trade for Mumbai in the ongoing 2024 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. He last played an international match for Team India back in August this year.
