Australia's recent record in One-Day International cricket is abysmal, to say the least. Led by Pat Cummins, the mighty Aussies thumped India in a high-voltage final in Ahmedabad to clinch their sixth ODI World Cup title last year. However, they have been quite ordinary in the 50-over format this year, losing four matches in their last eight ODI outings.
The defending champions' humiliating series defeat against Pakistan sums up their sorry state in ODIs. So, as they prepare for the all-important Champions Trophy in Pakistan, there are several out-of-form players who might be axed from the ODI team.
Glenn Maxwell
The swashbuckling all-rounder was an integral member of the Australian side that swatted aside India in front of a jam-packed Ahmedabad crowd to lift the 2023 World Cup. However, soon after showcasing his incredible all-round attributes in the marquee event, Glenn Maxwell lost his Midas touch, failing to live up to the hype in the subsequent white-ball matches.
He had a forgettable IPL 2024 campaign, and as a result, he wasn't retained by Royal Challengers Bengaluru. His performance worsened in the 50-over format, as he managed only 55 runs in six ODI outings in 2024. Therefore, considering his age and poor recent form, the Australian think tank might sideline him from the ODI format and drop him from their Champions Trophy squad.
Jake Fraser-McGurk
Renowned for his hard-hitting abilities, Jake Fraser-McGurk was fast-tracked to the Australian white-ball setup following his batting heroics for Delhi Capitals in IPL 2024. However, the explosive batter found it challenging to adhere to the demands of international cricket.
In five ODI matches, Fraser-McGurk has managed only 80 runs at a mediocre average of 16. Although he has struck at a blistering rate, the fast bowlers have exploited his technical flaws, thriving on his weakness against the moving ball.
So, given that the Aussies don't have enough ODIs left before the Champions Trophy, they might stop experimenting with the opening position and pair up Travis Head with Matthew Short at the top order.
Marnus Labuschagne
Marnus Labuschagne is another player who is on the Australian selectors' firing line for his inconsistency in white-ball cricket. Labuschagne, who has been a vital member of the Australian Test side, hasn't been able to replicate the same success in ODIs, scoring 1778 runs at an average of 36.29, a figure that is significantly lower than the benchmark for top-order batters in modern-day ODIs.
More importantly, the right-handed batter averages only 24.67 with the bat in ten ODI innings this year. So, considering his prolonged rough patch in ODIs, the Aussie think tank might show Labuschagne the exit door from the ODIs.
