In match No. 40 of the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2024, West Indies will play against Afghanistan at the Daren Sammy Cricket Ground in Gros Islet, St Lucia. It will be interesting to see which team will maintain an unbeaten record in the group stage.

Both teams have already secured spots in the Super 8s, rendering this match insignificant. T20Is have proven to be Afghanistan’s forte, bolstered by a wealth of mystery spinners, notably its skipper Rashid Khan.

Afghanistan's Journey So Far

The Afghanistan top order has consistently played commendable in the ongoing marquee tournament, Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Ibrahim Zadran have contributed significantly with the bat.

The middle order has failed and has not performed up to expectations, the team will expect better performances from Nabi, Omarzai, Najibullah and Gulbadin to provide much-needed support to the top order.

Afghanistan will, however, miss Mujeeb Ur Rahman due to a recurring finger injury. Hazratullah Zazai has stepped in as his replacement in the squad. Despite Mujeeb’s absence, which came after his lone appearance against Uganda, Afghanistan remains confident with replacements like Noor Ahmad, who impressed with economical bowling against Papua New Guinea and New Zealand.

The bowling attack has been at its best in the last three games, and they expect early strikes from Fazalhaq Farooqi and Mohammad Nabi.

Rashid Khan and Naveen-ul-Haq are key bowlers for the side, and they must do well in the middle overs. Azmatullah Omarzai, Janat, and Noor Ahmed add variety to this attack.

Afghan pacers have given commendable peformances and provided crucial breakthroughs. They can likely make one change and can rest Fazalhaq Farooqi so that he can get a bit of rest before the Super 8, but looking at the playing conditions and opposition he is likely to play and make an impact against West Indies.
