With the T20 World Cup 2024 on the horizon, Team India faces some uncertainties regarding the availability of several of their key players. From injury concerns to fluctuating form, each player’s situation adds an element of intrigue and concern for fans and selectors alike.

Here at OneCricket, we take a look at five players who can potentially miss tickets for the premier T20 event in the West Indies and United States in June this year.

Indian players who could miss T20 World Cup 2024

1. Rishabh Pant

After much speculation and consideration, Rishabh Pant is poised to make his return to competitive cricket through the forthcoming IPL 2024 season. The dashing wicketkeeper-batsman was involved in a near-fatal car crash back in December 2022, which subsequently ruled him out of action for India’s entire 2023 calendar year.

While Pant has attained rapid recovery since then, he remains an unlikely candidate for T20 World Cup 2024 selection, even if he ends up enjoying a profitable IPL 2024 season. Lack of international exposure in the past 15 months aside, an earlier report indicated that the wicketkeeper is only fit enough to play this year’s IPL purely as a batter.

2. KL Rahul

Batting stalwart KL Rahul, who opened the innings for the Indian team across the past two T20 World Cups, will likely miss out on this year’s event owing to an injury. The cricketer complained of quadriceps pain during India’s series-opening first Test match against England at Hyderabad back in January 2024.

While KL Rahul was subsequently ruled out of the remainder of India’s Test series, as of now, it remains to be seen whether he will be attaining full recovery in time for the IPL 2024 season in late March.

3. Mohammed Shami

Indian speed gun Mohammed Shami was recently ruled out of this year’s IPL 2024 season owing to an injury he sustained to his left ankle. The seasoned speedster featured in the 2023 World Cup in December last year and played the entire tournament despite dealing with chronic heel issues.

While Shami recently underwent successful heel surgery, he is currently eyeing a comeback to the national side for December’s tour of Australia. His recovery phase itself rules him out of the impending T20 World Cup 2024.

4. Hardik Pandya

Hardik Pandya suffered an ankle injury during last year’s 2023 World Cup. After nearly four months of his rest and recovery phase, the star all-rounder made a return to competitive cricket through a local T20 tournament at DY Patil Stadium in late-February.

While he is currently on a path to lead the Mumbai Indians franchise in IPL 2024, his seven-month-long absence from international cricket up until the launch of T20 World Cup 2024 will likely make selectors reconsider their plans for the all-rounder. Moreover, his performance and fitness will also be closely monitored during his two-month IPL 2024 regime.

5. Virat Kohli

Virat Kohli is currently on a sabbatical from the game to spend time with his family. The cricketer was recently blessed with a baby boy and is enjoying his stay in England alongside his wife Anushka Sharma.

Kohli skipped India’s entire five-match home Test series against England, and is yet to confirm his IPL 2024 participation for the RCB. Until he makes any official announcement regarding his return to competitive cricket, a level of uncertainty will continue to loom over his T20 World Cup 2024 selection.
