Usman Khawaja quashed all retirement rumours by claiming that he is not looking that far ahead in the game. As of now, the Australian Test opener is focusing on his side’s upcoming two-match series in New Zealand.

Khawaja was recently crowned by the ICC as 2023’s Test Player of the Year for his splendid 1,210-run show throughout the 12 months. At the age of 37, the 71-Test veteran is currently placed six on ICC’s rankings for Test batsmen.

Usman Khawaja denied all rumours involving his potential retirement after the New Zealand Tests. While speaking with the media ahead of the series opener at Wellington, the Australian batting warhorse claimed that he is not looking too far down the road, as his primary focus continues to remain contributing to his team.

He stated that he is making sure he remains mentally ready to keep playing Test cricket for Australia. Usman Khawaja said:

“I’m trying not to look too far ahead, because I don’t trust the game, the game’s tough. And I know not to look too far ahead because it can bring you back down to reality very quickly. For me it’s just about contributing for the team and I’ve said before making sure I’m enjoying it, making sure I’m mentally ready to play at the Test level.”

The 37-year-old also added that he is not the only active senior member in the Australian cricket team at the moment, and cited the examples of his decade-long teammates Nathan Lyon (36) and Steve Smith (35). Khawaja added:

“I understand I’m 37, so people always ask me about the finishing line, but we’ve got a few guys like Nathan Lyon’s 36, Smith’s 35, we’ve got a few experienced players in the team.”

Usman Khawaja is currently in New Zealand as part of Australia’s 14-member group for their upcoming two-match Test battle against the hosts.

The first of the two Tests will be played at the Basin Reserve in Wellington between February 29 and March 4. The series also constitutes a part of Australia’s WTC title defence.
