Indian cricket faced a major blow as spearhead Jasprit Bumrah walked off the field during Day 2 of the Sydney Test against Australia. He walked out of the ground with the support staff to get some scans on a potential injury. Ahead of the Champions Trophy 2025, scheduled for February, signs are not good for India.

Jasprit Bumrah is one of the greatest modern-day fast bowlers in world cricket. He is leading the wicket tally in the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy with 32 wickets. 

However, the fatigue of long spells led to wear and tear on his body. On Day 2 of the fifth Test against Australia, Bumrah mysteriously disappeared from the ground. He changed into training gears and left the field, leading to speculations about a massive injury concern.

That being said, in case Bumrah does end up getting injured, India will need replacements for the Champions Trophy 2025, which is due to start next month. Here are three potential candidates who can step into Bumrah’s shoes.

3. Prasidh Krishna

Prasidh Krishna is a right-arm fast bowler who has tons of experience playing all formats of the game. In 17 ODIs that he has played for India, Krishna picked up 29 wickets with a 25.58 average and 5.60 economy. 

Moreover, in first-class cricket, the fast bowler has 75 wickets in 21 games. Also, in the Sydney Test as well, the pacer showed a lot of promise by breaking a crucial partnership. With the experience and pace he has, Prasidh Krishna is one of the likely candidates who can replace Jasprit Bumrah in the Champions Trophy 2025.

2. Mukesh Kumar

There's Mukesh Kumar, who also has a potential to come into the team as an injury replacement for Jasprit Bumrah. In 50 first-class games, he managed to chip 203 wickets with a 2.86 economy. For India, he played 6 ODIs to pick 5 wickets and also accumulated 20 wickets in 17 T20Is. 

Mukesh has the pace and accuracy to leave an impact with the new ball. His yorkers and short-pitched deliveries could unsettle any batter on a given day. Moreover, considering his experience in international cricket, Mukesh Kumar has the flair to replace Bumrah in India’s Champions Trophy squad.

1. Mohammed Shami

Mohammed Shami should be a no brainer choice for the selection committee if he is fit to play. Shami has been India’s consistent fast bowler, who wreaked havoc in the 2023 ODI World Cup with 24 wickets. However, the pacer has since missed tons of action due to multiple injury concerns. He lost out on a spot in Border-Gavaskar Trophy and yet continued in the domestic affairs with team Bengal. 

As far as stats are concerned, Shami has 195 wickets in 101 ODIs for India. He can bowl long spells with the same intensity and accuracy, making him a stand-out bowler for India. Therefore, if Shami passes fitness tests in time, he shall be an automatic replacement for Jasprit Bumrah in India’s Champions Trophy squad.
