The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has released a significant update on premier Indian fast bowler Mohammed Shami. The 34-year-old recently made his return to competitive cricket after a gap of nearly one year upon seemingly recovering from an injury he sustained during the 2023 ODI World Cup back in late-2023.
The BCCI explained that the board’s medical team has been working closely with Shami at the Centre of Excellence on his recovery and rehabilitation. As per the update, the Indian speedster has completely recovered from his right heel problem. However, Mohammed Shami will have to undergo more conditioning work before making his comeback to international cricket.

On December 23, the BCCI revealed that Mohammed Shami is now exhibiting minor swelling on his left knee owing to the increased joint loading from his bowling workload. On the basis of a medical assessment, the BCCI’s medical team has come to a conclusion that the 34-year-old will require more time for recovery, and he will not be able to make his return to the Indian team at any point during the remainder of the 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy Test series in Australia.
The Bengal quick will continue to undergo targeted strength and conditioning work with the medical staff at BCCI’s Centre of Excellence, and his participation in the ongoing Vijay Hazare Trophy 2024-25 season will largely depends upon his recovery progress.
Mohammed Shami recently played a Ranji Trophy match for Bengal at Indore in November, where he bowled 43 overs against Madhya Pradesh. Moreover, the legendary Indian speedster also played all nine matches for Bengal at the subsequent Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy.
Shami’s last piece of international action came during the final of the 2023 World Cup in Ahmedabad. The seasoned pacer finished the tournament as its highest wicket-taker with 24 scalps from just seven innings.
