Against all odds, the India Women’s team captured the World Cup 2025 by defeating South Africa in a tense finale at the DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai. This was India’s first Women’s World title, as they finally broke their jinx of losing at crucial junctures and overcame the hurdles to secure the title.
Almost every single player delivered the goods in the tournament as the team effort led India to a historic World title in front of their home crowd. The team is getting all the laurels, and they thoroughly deserve it, but things have not been easy for the India Women’s team in the past.
Srinivasan's old comments resurfaces after India's win
After India’s triumph over the South Africans, CSK Chairman and former BCCI President N Srinivasan’s old comments resurfaced, in which he bashed Women’s cricket and openly stated that he wouldn’t let it happen and that they have no business playing this sport.
At an event in 2017, after Harmanpreet Kaur’s brilliant 171 against Australia, Srinivasan allegedly told former India captain, Diana Edulji, that “he hates Women’s cricket” and will never let it grow.
‘If I had my way, I wouldn’t let women’s cricket happen’. He hates women’s cricket," Eduljee said at the Indian Express' Express Adda.
Why this comment will haunt Srinivasan forever
The comments were made when India reached the finals of the Women’s World Cup in 2017 and narrowly lost to the hosts, England. This was a heartbreaking moment for them, as the team was searching for their maiden World title.
However, everything changed in the 2025 edition. India was the host and they outplayed Australia in the semi-finals in a historic game, and finally silenced their critics with a breathtaking performance to capture the championship.
For someone who allegedly didn’t want Women’s cricket to grow, the team has silenced Srinivasan and every other critic with a tournament to remember.
