It seems the IPL 2026 mini auction destination plan has changed, and instead of having the auction in India, the BCCI is planning to organize it outside the nation. The franchises have not been informed about the movement, but they have been given a hint by the IPL’s governing body.

The potential new venue for the IPL 2026 mini auction is somewhere in the Gulf region, with Abu Dhabi being a strong favourite to host the marquee event. Also, Qatar and Oman are also explored as BCCI ponders the new destination for the auction.

According to reports by Cricbuzz, the BCCI, the richest cricketing board had earlier decided that the entire event will take place in India, but there has been a sudden change in plan partly due to the event clashing with festivals and wedding season.

IPL's history with overseas auctions

This is not the first time an IPL auction (mini or mega) will take place overseas. The trend started in 2014 when Dubai hosted the first-ever overseas auction. However, the trend changed in the next few years, before the last two auctions witnessed overseas auction venues.

The 2024 auction took place in Dubai, UAE, and the mega auction in 2025 was completed in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.

Auction date, retention date revealed

As previously reported by Cricbuzz, the auction is set to take place around mid-December, most likely around December 15, and the retention deadline day will take place around mid-November, as the BCCI officials will announce the dates soon.

The report also mentions that several trade deals are set to go through before the retention deadline day, with Rajasthan Royals captain, Sanju Samson hogging the limelight as reports of him going to DC have intensified.
