On Friday, June 20, India will lock horns with England in the first Test of a five-match series. All eyes will be on Jasprit Bumrah, the spearhead of the bowling attack in the Shubman Gill-led side.

While England are wary of the threat posed by Bumrah, Indian fans are also concerned after head coach Gautam Gambhir confirmed that the right-arm seamer will not play all five Test matches. Notably, Bumrah suffered a back injury following an overload of work during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, which is why the management is now carefully monitoring the workload of the Mumbai Indians star.

Bharat Arun Explains How Bumrah Can Play All Matches

Reports indicate that the 31-year-old may play only three matches. However, former India bowling coach Bharat Arun, speaking to RevSportz, has shed light on how Bumrah could potentially feature in all five Tests.

Arun explained that both excessive and insufficient bowling can lead to injuries, and the management must strike the right balance.

“Too much bowling and too little bowling, both cause injuries. They are the perfect recipe for a bowler to get injured. Obviously, we cannot control the number of overs that Jasprit Bumrah bowls in a match. But according to the number of overs he has bowled, the practice sessions can be trimmed down for him when he needs to focus on recovery. It can be a strengthening session in the gym or some recovery work with the physios. Handling him will be crucial,” Arun told RevSportz.

Arun added that the other bowlers need to step up, which would allow Bumrah to rest and avoid bowling excessive overs.

Jasprit Bumrah Struggles in Intra-Squad Match

Before the start of the series, India faced India A in an intra-squad match. It was a concerning outing for Bumrah, as the Mumbai Indians seamer struggled and went wicketless.

Bumrah looked off-colour on day two, failing to pick up a single wicket—a rare occurrence for him in red-ball cricket.  Bumrah bowled seven overs and conceded 36 runs. The positive for India is that rest of the bowlers stepped up as Prasidh Krishna and Mohammed Siraj were on top of their game, each picking up two wickets.
