The wait for the start of the India-England series is nearly over. The two cricketing heavyweights will face off in the first of the five-match Test series on Friday, June 20, at Headingley in Leeds.
On Monday, June 16, Subhayan Chakraborty from RevSportz shared visuals of the pitch on his channel, sending the internet into a frenzy. Notably, fans struggled to spot the actual pitch as a heavy layer of grass covered the surface, and, to the naked eye, it looked like a challenging strip for the batters.
Fans quickly took to social media platforms, expressing concerns for the Indian team as the upcoming series marks a new era—one without Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, who recently announced their retirements from Test cricket.
Fans React To Pitch For The 1st Test
The comment sections were filled with memes, trolls, and genuine concerns. This article will highlight some of the reactions circulating online after the first look at the pitch for the opening Test.

"Pitch h kahaa😂😂😂ghaas hi dikh rhi h"
"Lagta hai 36 ka record bhi tutega"
"That's the pitch😵💫. Swing + bounce India gonna get cooked"
Pitch Expected To Get Better In Few Days
While a section of fans were worried over the condition of the pitch, another section were assured that the pitch will get better in the next few days. Notably, it is a comman procedure in cricket, where the surface is covered with a layer of grass to protect the pitch from any kind of damage.
Since four days are left for the first Test, a lot of grass would be removed from the pitch and it won't look the same as in the image posted above.
Chief Curator Confirms Pitch To Get Better
Shubhayan Chakraborty of RevSportz spoke to chief curator of Headingley Stadium, where he asked about the condition of the surface and how will it behave during the start of the Test.
The curator confirmed that the surface will get better and a lot of grass will be trimmed off by the time first ball will be bowled in Leeds. Nonetheless, he added that it will be a challenging surface for the batters and the batters need to be on top of their game.
