After a thrilling WTC final, the World Test Championship cycle 2025-27 is starting up. In the upcoming Test series against Bangladesh, Sri Lanka is starting their new WTC cycle with big hopes.
As Sri Lanka gears up for the new series, Dhananjaya de Silva reflected on their missed shot at the WTC final and now has his sights set on a strong, dominant start to the new cycle.
De Silva Eyes Fresh Start After Previous Heartbreak
Sri Lanka started the World Test Championship 2023-25 cycle with domination. But they lost the rhythm in the middle. Despite standing close to qualifying for the final, they were whitewashed in the last four matches. This unfortunate streak ended their hopes of reaching the WTC final.
Sri Lanka is set to start the new WTC cycle with the upcoming two-match Test series against Bangladesh. As quoted by ESPNcricinfo, Sri Lankan skipper Dhananjaya de Silva reminded the side of the missed chance last time and stressed the importance of winning this home series to start the new cycle on a high.
“We had a big chance to get to final, but unfortunately, we couldn't do it. Even yesterday, when I talked to the boys, I reminded them where we could have been (at Lord's this week), and where we ended up. As we start a new cycle, we know we have to win our home series. We need to pick up all those points. It's a great opportunity to start a new cycle with a home series," he said.
Sri Lankan Skipper Urges The Team To Grab Every Chance
The upcoming cycle of the WTC is set to pose a challenge for the Sri Lankan side. In the new cycle, they will play 12 Tests, as every match will be crucial. While their next series after Bangladesh is only scheduled for next year, skipper Dhananjaya de Silva refuses to use that gap as an excuse. Instead, he’s keeping the team focused solely on their game.
“Our job as professionals is to adapt to any situation. We have to play the situations we're given - we can't blame anyone. Last year we got a few Tests, but this year we didn't, and that's not something that is in our hands,” he added
Sri Lanka is all set to face Bangladesh in the first Test match of the series on June 17. After facing a whitewash in the last series, they will try hard to bounce back. Meanwhile, Bangladesh will be eager to kick off their WTC 2025-27 campaign on a high note.
