On Friday, June 13, India’s senior team faced India A in an intra-squad match, their final warm-up before squaring off against England in the first Test on June 20.

Over the first two days, India witnessed several positives: new captain Shubman Gill and star batter KL Rahul scored fifties, while Sarfaraz Khan—who has been overlooked for the senior squad—slammed a 76-ball century. However, there are growing concerns regarding Jasprit Bumrah’s form.

Bumrah Struggles Against India A

Despite being the spearhead of India’s pace attack, Bumrah looked off-colour on day two, failing to pick up a single wicket—a rare occurrence for him in red-ball cricket. Reports from ABPLive indicate that Bumrah bowled seven overs and conceded 36 runs, with his line and length appearing wayward.

What makes this performance more concerning is that the pitch was not flat and offered assistance to the bowlers. In contrast, Prasidh Krishna and Mohammed Siraj were on top of their game, each picking up two wickets.

Jasprit Bumrah’s Track Record in England

Bumrah has played 45 Test matches, nine of them in England. Across 17 innings, the Mumbai Indians star has taken 37 wickets at an average of 26.27—his second-highest average in any country where he has played multiple Tests.

While he has taken two five-wicket hauls in England, his stats suggest he does not enjoy bowling there as much as he does in Australia.

Bumrah to Not Play All Five Test Matches

India have been dealt another blow, as Bumrah will not feature in all five Tests. Head coach Gautam Gambhir confirmed that Bumrah’s workload will be managed throughout the series, and he is expected to participate in a maximum of three matches.

The decision on Bumrah’s availability for each match will depend on the state of the series, but it has been confirmed that the right-arm seamer will play in the series opener.
