The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) is confident that Shakib Al Hasan will likely return to Bangladesh for the upcoming Test series against South Africa next month, despite ongoing political tensions.

This will mark Shakib’s first return to the country since the resignation of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and the fall of the Awami League government, of which Shakib had been a part.

The veteran all-rounder was among 147 people named in a murder case filed in Dhaka last month, shortly after anti-government protests led to Sheikh Hasina's resignation. At the time of the political upheaval, Shakib was not in Bangladesh as he was playing in the Global T20 League in Canada and later travelled to Pakistan and India for various cricket commitments.

Shakib Al Hasan Will Not Be Harassed After Return To Bangladesh

The interim government has given assurances that Shakib Al Hasan will not face arrest despite the case filed against him. Bangladesh’s law adviser, Asif Nazrul, expressed hope that law enforcement agencies would exercise restraint.

"I think the honourable chief adviser, law adviser and sports adviser have spoken very clearly regarding Shakib Al Hasan. There is a clear message from the Bangladesh government that no one will be harassed unfairly in the cases that have been filed. We believe the interim government has made its position very clear on Shakib. Unless there is an injury problem or a selection-related issue, I personally don't see any reason as of now why Shakib Al Hasan should not play in Bangladesh in the home series," Nafees said, as quoted by ESPNcricinfo.

BCB officials have emphasised that unless there is an injury or selection-related issue, he is expected to be available for the South Africa series.

Despite the controversy, he remains an indispensable figure in Bangladesh cricket. His availability for the South Africa series is eagerly awaited, as his presence will be crucial to the team’s performance. However, with the political landscape in Bangladesh still uncertain, it remains to be seen if the legal and political challenges will have any impact on his return.
