Jos Buttler to miss IPL 2025 playoffs (Source: @IPL)
Gujarat Titans’ Director of Cricket Vikram Solanki has played down concerns about the absence of star opener Jos Buttler for the IPL 2025 playoffs. He stated that the team will rely on its collective strength rather than individual brilliance.
Buttler is set to miss the business end of the tournament due to national duty, as he joins England’s ODI and T20I series against the West Indies from May 29 to June 10.
GT Unfazed By Buttler’s Departure Ahead Of Playoffs
Speaking after GT's 83-run defeat to CSK at the Narendra Modi Stadium on Sunday, May 25, Solanki addressed the issue head-on, making it clear that GT would not be overly affected by his absence.
“He's not available for the playoffs. So, we will approach the game as a team. It's not about one individual or three individuals, as you keep reminding me - they’ve had good seasons,” Solanki said in the post-match press conference.
He lauded the consistency of GT’s top order throughout the season, while also defending the middle order, which has had fewer opportunities due to the dominance of the top batters. It is important to mention that with Buttler departing, Gujarat has brought in Sri Lankan batter Kusal Mendis as a replacement.
“I'm glad the top order has been scoring most of the runs. That's a good thing. Yes, it means the middle order has sometimes not had the opportunity to bat. But when they have played, I think they've actually given a good account of themselves.”
Buttler finished his IPL 2025 campaign with 538 runs from 14 innings at an average of 59.78 and a strike rate of 163.04. He registered five half-centuries, including a highest score of 97 not out off 54 balls against DC.
Gujarat Titans Playoff Picture Still Unclear
Despite the heavy defeat vs CSK, Gujarat Titans remain on top of the IPL 2025 points table with 18 points and a net run rate of +0.254. However, with MI, PBKS, and RCB all within striking distance and with one match left each, GT’s top-two finish is far from guaranteed.
To secure a spot in Qualifier 1, Gujarat now needs both PBKS and RCB to lose their remaining games. If either team wins, GT will drop to third or fourth and face the risk of immediate elimination in the Eliminator round.
