Chennai Super Kings’ (CSK) stand-in captain MS Dhoni lost his cool during their final IPL 2025 league stage match against Gujarat Titans (GT) at the Narendra Modi Stadium on Sunday. Known for his calm and strategic clarity, Dhoni appeared visibly agitated when teammates Shivam Dube and Matheesha Pathirana failed to respond to his field-setting instructions.

Commentators were quick to pick up on this, noting that Dube and Pathirana were seemingly out of sync with Dhoni’s tactical directions. The uncharacteristic display of emotion from Dhoni came as a surprise to fans, given his reputation as 'Captain Cool.'

It is important to note that ironically, the field placements that eventually got implemented produced immediate results. Despite CSK's earlier struggles in the season, they ended their campaign on a high note, routing GT by a commanding margin of 83 runs. The emphatic win might have come too late to revive their playoff hopes, but it dealt a serious blow to Gujarat’s desire of securing a top-two finish.

After 14 games, Gujarat remain at the top the table with 18 points, but their NRR took a significant hit in the heavy defeat. Their qualification into the top two now hinges on other results they will need RCB to lose against LSG on May 27, and must also hope that the winner of the between MI and PBKS do not surpass them on NRR.

Will MS Dhoni Return For IPL 2026?

Meanwhile, the spotlight remains firmly on Dhoni. With Chennai’s season now over, speculation is high about whether the 43-year-old will return for another IPL season or finally hang up his boots.
