Shubman Gill has been appointed as new captain of the Indian Test team, replacing recently-retired Rohit Sharma. As part of his first assignment as national skipper, Gill will lead a new-look Indian side in the upcoming five-match Test tour of England.
Roughly a month prior to the high-profile series, the charismatic top-order batter has received a blunt warning from former Indian cricketer and prominent commentator Sunil Gavaskar.
Gavaskar says Gill should behave in a certain way
As quoted by Sports Tak, former Indian cricketer Sunil Gavaskar says there will now be additional pressure on Shubman Gill since he has been appointed as new captain of the Test team. He said:
“There is always pressure on the player who gets elected as India's captain as there is a big difference between being a member of the team and being the captain.”
Sunil Gavaskar also urged Shubman Gill to start behaving in a way that would command respect from other members of the team. The prominent commentator added that for a captain, behavior is “more important” than performances. He added:
“Because when you are a team member, you generally just interact with players close to you, but when you become the captain, you should behave in a way that the other players in the team respect you and a captain's behaviour is more important than his performance.”
Earlier this month, the BCCI appointed Shubman Gill as India’s Test captain, and named blistering wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant as his deputy.
Currently leading the Gujarat Titans franchise in IPL 2025, Gill will soon be travelling to England for a five-match Test series. The first Test will be played between June 20 and June 24 in Headingley, Leeds.
