Much has been speculated around a potential retirement U-turn of legendary Australian opener David Warner. A few days ago, Warner hinted about making a return to the Australian team for the upcoming Border-Gavaskar Trophy Test series against India.

However, the 38-year-old has now clarified that his comments were taken out of context and he would only consider return if he was to receive a call-up from the Australian selectors themselves.

David Warner addresses Australian comeback rumours

David Warner retired from Test cricket earlier this year after Australia’s three-match series against Pakistan at home. The legendary opening batter also made his exit from Australia’s white-ball setups after the 2024 T20 World Cup in the West Indies and the USA.

As Australia struggle to find a suitable opening partner for Usman Khawaja for the upcoming Test series against India, several emerging reports indicated that David Warner was considering making his return to the national side. However, the attacking left-hander has now clarified that he would only be making his return to international cricket if he would receive a direct call from the Australian selectors themselves.

While commentating during Australia’s first ODI match against Pakistan at the MCG on November 4, Warner said:

“My comment was only if my phone rang and they called me, you’re not going to say no. If I was to get a call, why wouldn’t I say yes?”

With David Warner now retired, several cricket experts are backing either Cameron Bancroft or rising star Sam Konstas to find the opening slot with Usman Khawaja for the impending five Tests against India. However, both cricketers failed to make any impact against India A bowlers at the Great Barrier Reef Arena in Mackay earlier this month.

The Australian cricket team, under the leadership of Pat Cummins, is slated to face Team India in a series of five Tests between November 22 and January 7. The first of those Tests will be hosted by the Optus Stadium in Perth.

The series will also constitute a part of the ongoing 2023-25 WTC cycle. Pat Cummins and co. recently toppled India to take the top spot on the championship points table.
