'Rohit Sharma Doesn't Trust His Defence': Manjrekar Makes Controversial Remark

Rohit Sharma continues to draw much criticism from all corners of India’s cricketing spectrum for his listless run in Test cricket. During India’s 0-3 series defeat against New Zealand at home, team captain and legendary opening batter tallied just 91 runs across six innings at a dismal average of 15.16.

The 37-year-old even failed to pull off a 147-run chase for India in the third Test of the series at Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium, where his 11-run failure led to his team’s 25-run defeat. Following Sharma’s latest string of failures, former Indian cricketer and expert commentator Sanjay Manjrekar has given his take over the Mumbaikar’s concerning batting form.

Manjrekar believes Sharma does not trust his defence

Sanjay Manjrekar believes that Rohit Sharma is trying to find his own way of making match-winning runs for India, and the legendary opener does not trust his own defence anymore.

The former cricketer further added that Sharma’s next approach would be to counterattack opposition bowlers, and he even did so against New Zealand during the small chase in Mumbai. He said:

“I will never say that he is reckless because he is finding his own way to ensure that he gets runs to get the team to win. He clearly doesn’t trust his defence anymore; you could see that there was a LBW appeal, and that must have just made him feel unsettled ever more. The next thing that Rohit Sharma looks to do is counterattack, and he did that because the target wasn’t a huge one, and who knows, a couple of shots here and there and he would have maybe replicated that Bangladesh run-chase.”

Even during India’s preceding home Test series against Bangladesh, Rohit Sharma made just 42 runs in four innings at a below-par average of 10.50. After India’s crashing defeat at the Wankhede Stadium, Sharma admitted that he did not manage to bat well in the two home Test series for his country.

As of now, he along with the rest of his national colleagues will soon be taking flight for Australia for the impending five-match Border-Gavaskar Trophy Test series against the hosts. The first of the five Test matches will be played at the Optus Stadium in Perth from November 22 onwards.
