In a significant development, the BCCI unveiled a robust Indian squad for the upcoming Test series against England. While Shubman Gill was officially appointed as the captain, veteran fast bowler Mohammed Shami missed out on selection.
Ajit Agarkar Speaks On Shami's Omission For ENG Tour
Considering Mohammed Shami is immensely experienced, his axing raised a million eyebrows. However, BCCI selection committee head Ajit Agarkar provided the exact reason why they had to ignore the fast bowler for the tour.
Speaking to the media, the former fast bowler revealed that Shami had undergone some MRI scans that revealed fresh injury setbacks for the experienced campaigner.
This is the reason why the BCCI medical team declared him unfit for the entire England tour, eventually leading to his snub from the Test side.
"He's had a little bit of a setback over the past week, got some MRIs done. Wasn't going to be able to play five Tests. Don't think his workload is where he needs to be. Medical guys told he'll be ruled out. We were hoping he'll play some part, but if he's not fit, we'd rather pick guys fit and available rather than waiting," Agarkar was quoted as saying by Express Sports.
Mohammed Shami's Test Career
In his illustrious career, Mohammed Shami emerged as one of India's biggest match-winners, scripting numerous victories with his lethal seam bowling. He was particularly successful in the Asian subcontinent.
Overall, Shami has bagged 229 Test wickets in 64 matches. While he averages 27.71 runs per a wicket, the seamer has taken just over 50 deliveries to provide a breakthrough.
However, considering his age and fitness concerns, the fast bowler might just have played his final Test for the Indian team.
