'Why Blame One Person?' Aakash Chopra Calls Out Trolls For Blaming SKY For WC Defeat

The scenes panned out at the Narendra Modi stadium on 19th November broke a million hearts across the globe. The unbeaten Indian cricket team lost the ICC Men's ODI World Cup 2023 finals to the mighty Australia, thus marking the end of a glorious campaign.

While many things didn’t land in India’s favour, the batting collapse was the most talked about aspect. Even skipper Rohit Sharma blamed the lack of run production behind the heart-wrenching loss.

While Shreyas Iyer and Shubman Gill failed to cross the double-digit mark, the lacklustre form of Suryakumar Yadav is what attracted the trolls the most. SKY has been a subject of ridicule ever since his selection for the World Cup squad was finalised.

Many fans believe that the middle-order batter didn’t perhaps deserve the spot due to a lack of 50-over format experience. While Yadav has proven experience in List-A cricket, his chances were limited in international cricket.

While Surya performed handsomely against England, his failure in the pivotal finals clash led to heavy trolling on the internet. Amid raging hate, former Indian cricketer and commentator Aakash Chopra jumped in defence of the middle-order batter.

Via a YouTube video, Chopra said Suryakumar Yadav being subject to unjust criticism is disheartening. He also pointed out how the unknowns of pitch conditions didn’t suit unconventional batters like SKY. Also, players like Iyer and Gill underperformed, too. Thus, to single out Yadav alone is unfair per se.

“The pitch was tough, and he didn’t perform. It might not have been suitable for him. He scored against England but didn’t get opportunities in other matches. Shubman Gill and Shreyas Iyer also didn’t score in the final, so why single him out?," said Chopra

Suryakumar Yadav came in as a reserve and wasn’t supposed to be a regular player. He came in after dependable all-rounder Hardik Pandya injured his leg and got ruled out. Naturally, the abrupt promotion amid a high-pressure tournament got the better of Surya as he had to play against his natural style.

Hopefully, the batter redeems himself during the upcoming T20 series against Australia, wherein he is asked to lead the Indian side.
