New Zealand beat Pakistan by 78 runs in the 1st ODI of the tri-series. Batting first, Glenn Phillips’ century powered the Kiwis to a mammoth total of 330 runs. In the chase, Fakhar Zaman’s quick 84 wasn’t enough as his teammates crumbled under pressure to 252/10, leading to an embarrassing loss.

Here’s how Pakistan vs New Zealand panned out in Lahore:

PAK vs NZ Highlights: Shaheen Afridi breathes fire in the first over

New Zealand opted to bat first but couldn’t escape the wrath of Shaheen Afridi as he dismissed Will Young in the first over. A length ball outside the off stump and Young poked it with safe hands only to nick an outside edge to wicket-keeper Mohammad Rizwan.

However, veteran Kane Williamson played a gritty knock of 58 off 89 balls. He formed a 95-run partnership with Daryl Mitchell who also scored 81 off 84 balls with an impressive strike rate of 96.43.

Despite a steady partnership, New Zealand needed quick runs and Glenn Phillips stepped up to the occasion. He took on Naseem Shah and Shaheen Afridi to the cleaners to bring up his maiden ODI century.

He went unbeaten on 106 off just 74 balls with a 143.24 strike rate which helped New Zealand pile up a 330 runs total. For Pakistan, Shaheen Afridi conceded 88 runs in his 10 overs with 3 wickets whereas Naseem Shah had a horrible day, conceding 70 runs in his spell without a wicket.

PAK vs NZ Highlights: Fakhar Zaman shows strength on comeback

Fakhar Zaman opened the inning with Babar Azam and went out all guns blazing. However, his partner, Babar once again failed to spark his magic. The delivery, back of a length and turning in slightly, held on the surface just enough to force Babar into an awkward shot.

Attempting to tuck it square, he only managed to guide the ball towards short mid-wicket, where Glenn Phillips dived to his right and grabbed a fantastic catch. Kamran Ghulam and skipper Rizwan also failed to pile up runs on the board as Pakistan were down four wickets with 119 runs on the board.

Fakhar Zaman eventually lost his wicket on 82 off 69 balls. Salman Agha and Tayyab Tahir had a 50-run partnership for the 5th wicket but it wasn’t enough to control the required run rate. In the middle of this, Rachin Ravindra got badly injured as he got hit in the face, leading to incessant bleeding.

Meanwhile, Pakistan lost a handful of wickets in quick successions and required run rate piled up beyond the host team’s control. Eventually, Pakistan fell short of 78 runs to endure a humiliating defeat.
