'When the Doctor Comes, That's When..' - Waqar Younis on Shaheen Afridi's Injury

Former Pakistan fast-bowler Waqar Younis was suspicious of Shaheen Shah Afridi's fitness status as the latter had a physio and a team doctor around in the Asia Cup 2023 opener.

For the unversed, Shaheen after bowling his five overs walked off the field along with the team doctor and physiotherapist. While the reason behind this is still unknown, the pacer was earlier seen having a discussion with the team doctor.

The events led to a dialogue among the commentators. Andy Flower wanted Pakistan to take off the speedster, while Waqar expressed his concern regarding Shaheen being attended by the team doctor.

"If there’s a problem with Afridi, they should take him off. He’s a valuable asset for the Pakistan side," Flower said while commentating.

"I don’t mind physio around a fast bowler at third man or fine leg. But when the doctor comes, that’s when it gets a little worrying. Shaheen has both of them around him," Waqar stated.

Notably, Shaheen did not bowl further in the match. However, he did come back to the field. He bowled five overs in total, giving away 27 runs while also claiming two wickets; both of which came in his first over.

If there is nothing serious with regards to his fitness, he will be seen in action against India on September 2.

Shaheen's injury-troubled past

The 23-year-old was ruled out of the Asia Cup 2022 due to a knee injury. He made a comeback in the T20 World Cup 2022 but another knee injury hit him during the final versus England. Shahee marked his return in the Pakistan Super League 2023 and since then, he has been going strong.
