Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) spinner Digvesh Rathi has been fined 50% of his match fee and handed a one-match suspension after an on-field argument with Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) batter Abhishek Sharma during IPL 2025 match at the Ekana Stadium, Lucknow on Monday.
What Triggered the Clash Between Rathi and Abhishek Sharma?
The incident happened in the eighth over of SRH’s innings. Abhishek Sharma was on fire, scoring 59 runs off just 19 balls. Rathi was brought into the attack and managed to dismiss Abhishek. But instead of a calm celebration, Rathi pulled off his usual “notebook celebration” right in front of the batter.
This aggressive send-off didn’t go down well with Abhishek, who turned back and exchanged some angry words with Rathi. Umpires and players had to step in to stop things from escalating.
This wasn’t Rathi’s first offense this season. He had already picked up three demerit points from earlier matches, one against Punjab Kings and two against Mumbai Indians. With this latest incident, he now has five demerit points, which means an automatic one-match suspension.
He’s also been fined 50% of his match fees. Rathi will miss LSG’s next game against Gujarat Titans on May 22.
Abhishek Sharma Also Penalised for His Reaction
Abhishek Sharma wasn’t let off either. He has been fined 25% of his match fees for his reaction during the incident.
Even though there was this drama, Abhishek Sharma’s performance helped Sunrisers Hyderabad win the game by six wickets. This win also knocked LSG out of the playoff race for IPL 2025.
LSG had scored 206 runs, but SRH managed to chase down the target with a record score at the Ekana Stadium. Abhishek’s aggressive batting, including six sixes and four boundaries, made the difference for his team.
