As IPL 2025 crawls to a close for Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), one thing is clear that this season hasn’t gone according to the plan. From being runners-up in 2024 to crashing out before the playoffs this year, SRH’s fall has been steep and now whispers are getting louder around one big name: Ishan Kishan.
Will SRH Release Ishan Kishan After IPL 2025? Aakash Chopra Thinks So
Bought for a hefty INR 11.25 crore, Ishan Kishan was expected to bring fire at the top. But all SRH fans got was a flicker. He has managed just 231 runs in 12 games with one lone century propping up a below-par campaign. Take that knock out and the numbers start looking flat-out forgettable.
Former India cricketer Aakash Chopra isn’t one to mince words. And on his YouTube channel, he dropped a reality check about Ishan’s future with Hyderabad.
“This team might think about Ishan Kishan as to what needs to be done… If there is a drought after a century, there is a question about the direction you should go.”
Harsh? Maybe. But not far from the truth. Kishan came with a heavy price tag and bigger expectations. One knock can’t undo an otherwise silent season.
No Room At The Top
The bigger issue? SRH’s top order is buzzing without him. Abhishek Sharma has been smashing it. Travis Head has been decent. Even Atharva Taide looked promising in his outing. With this much local and overseas firepower, Kishan suddenly looks like the odd one out.
“If Abhishek Sharma plays like this, it seems like he is very good, as he is playing extremely well. Atharva Taide was there in this match. Otherwise, Travis Head is there. You feel that is also fine,” Chopra pointed out, making it clear that there is no guaranteed spot for Kishan anymore.
SRH Might Rethink Their Template
Aakash Chopra also hinted that SRH could be rethinking their playing template, especially when it comes to player balance and price-value tradeoffs. But he believes they will probably stick to their core, which might not include Kishan if they are looking to free up a big purse for next season’s auction.
“They will definitely ask themselves a question… They might think about it, but then they will think they shouldn’t. They don’t need to make too many changes,” he said.
When franchises shell out over INR 11 crore for a batter, they expect consistency, not just one headline-grabbing ton. Kishan’s underwhelming season along with SRH’s struggling campaign, might just put him on the release radar.
Will SRH pull the plug? It is too early to say for sure. But it won’t be a surprise if the orange camp makes a tough call at the auction table. Because in a league as cut-throat as the IPL, reputation alone doesn’t guarantee retention.
