Former Pakistan cricketer and Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chief, Ramiz Raja, has criticized the decision to break the formidable opening pair of Babar Azam and Mohammed Rizwan. Following Pakistan's defeat in the T20I series against New Zealand, Raja questioned the selectors on the benefits of dismantling the globally renowned opening duo. The team has experimented with new openers, Saim Ayub and Mohammed Rizwan, in the ongoing series, resulting in underwhelming performances.

Raja expressed his concerns on his YouTube Channel, stating:

"So much pressure was created to break the opening pair of Babar and Rizwan. When you bring in new players, they may perform well in leagues, but international cricket is a different beast where there is pressure, and the focus of the entire world is on you. You broke the opening pair that was famous worldwide."

He questioned the selectors' decision, emphasizing the time it takes to build a reliable opening pair and the lack of alternatives. Raja also defended his support for captains, including the current T20I skipper Shaheen Shah Afridi, and said:

"The accusation made against me was that I backed Babar Azam. I support every captain because their role is to lead not just on the field during the game, but also extends to off the field as well."

Rizwan and Babar boast the highest T20I partnership runs, with 2,779 runs at an average of 48.75. The final T20I against New Zealand is set for Sunday in Christchurch.
