In its very first match, the second edition of the Women's Premier League (WPL) on Friday (February 23) unearthed a new cricketing gem in the form of Sajana Sajeevan, who smashed a last-ball six to help Mumbai Indians (MI) defeat the Delhi Capitals (DC).

Facing Capitals' experienced allrounder Alice Capsey with 5 runs needed off the last ball in the 20th over, Sajeevan hammered her for a six towards the deep mid-wicket region, helping MI retain wood over previous year's runners-up after a riveting tussle.

Hanging deep inside her crease, the England No.8 got a loopy leg-cutter from Capsey, which she managed to get underneath and belted over the ropes at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bangalore.

Jemimah Praises Sajeevan After Final-Ball Six

Sajeevan's last-ball six clinched the thriller for the defending champions and also attracted widespread praise towards the cricketer, not just from the fans but also the opposition camp, where senior India and Capitals batters Jemimah Rodrigues complimented the MI match-winner.

In a heartening Instagram post, Rodrigues noted down Sajeevan's journey of revival after "losing everything" in the devastating floods in Kerala and working extremely hard over her game to rise into prominence in MI jersey.

"The result was not what we hoped for but what a finish by Sajju the debutant!! Comes from a humble background, lost everything in the Kerala floods, walks in when the team requires 1 ball 5 runs and hits an effortless six! What a story and more over What a player!," Rodrigues wrote.

The thrilling end to the MI-DC clash not only showcased Sajeevan's talent but also her strong temperament, having seen the hardships of life that would've toughened her up before she found her big calling from Mumbai franchise.
